Simi Garewal heartbroken over friend Ratan Tata's death: Hard to bear your loss

Former actor Simi Garewal shared a post on X and mourned the death of industrialist Ratan Tata. The industry icon died on October 9 at the Breach Candy Hospital.

Ratan Tata, a towering industry icon and philanthropist, died on Wednesday, October 9. As the country mourns the tragic loss of the veteran industrialist, former actor Simi Garewal shared a heartfelt note about bidding farewell to her ‘friend’ Ratan. Simi Garewal once revealed that she briefly dated Ratan Tata, though she later married someone else. Despite that, the two remained close friends.

Tata, 86, died at Breach Candy Hospital after a prolonged illness. Simi paid her heartfelt tribute to Ratan on X and wrote, “They say you have gone. It's too hard to bear your loss, too hard. Farewell, my friend..#RatanTata (sic).”

Although Ratan Tata, a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, had an unmatched legacy of achievements, he never married and remained single throughout his life.

Ratan Tata made a rare appearance on Rendezvous With Simi Garewal, where he was asked about why he never married. He explained, "A whole series of things (stopped me from marrying) – timing, my absorption in work at the time. I came close to getting married sometimes, but it didn’t work out."

Tata also shared that he had fallen in love about four times and came close to marriage, but it never quite worked out. He also admitted to feeling lonely at times. "There are many times that I feel lonely about not having a wife or a family, and sometimes I long for it. Sometimes I enjoy the freedom of not having to worry about the feelings of someone else or the concerns of someone else. On other times, it does get a little lonely," he said.

Apart from this, Ratan had once opened up on his first love during a chat with Humans of Bombay. During the interaction, he revealed why he couldn't marry her. "It was in LA that I fell in love and almost got married. But at the same time, I had made the decision to move back, at least temporarily, since I had been away from my grandmother, who wasn’t keeping too well, for almost seven years. So I came back to visit her and thought that the person I wanted to marry would come to India with me, but because of the 1962 Indo-China war, her parents weren’t okay with her making the move anymore, and the relationship fell apart,” he shared.

Ratan Tata's body will be kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai's Nariman Point from 10.30 am to 4 pm on Thursday for people to pay their respects. At 3.30 pm, his body will be taken to the Worli crematorium for funeral.

In a statement confirming Ratan Tata's death on Wednesday night, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran said his "immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation".
