Police hunting hit-and-run driver after three-vehicle crash on Dundee street

Police are hunting a hit-and-run driver after a three-vehicle crash in Dundee.

Officers were called to Strathmore Avenue, near the junction with Hospital Street, on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver of a silver Land Rover fled the scene on foot after a collision with a taxi and a parked car.

Police were directing traffic as the road near Kings Cross Hospital was blocked just after 2pm.

A female passenger in the taxi was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Speaking at the scene the taxi driver, who did not wish to be named, said they were “lucky” they weren’t killed.

He said: “Everything went black at the time of impact, and there was smoke in the taxi.

“All the airbags deployed at the time of the collision.

“It’s lucky we weren’t killed.”

John Jackson, 68, told The Courier his car was damaged during the incident.

He said: “My Citroen DS3 was parked here at the time.

“It looks like the Euro bins struck my car after the initial smash. I was shocked to see the extent of the damage.”

Resident David Dobson said there was a deafening noise at the time of the collision.

‘Lamppost nearly landed in our garden

The 84-year-old said: “As soon as we heard the noise we thought, ‘What the hell has happened?’

“We saw the jeep had extensive damage to its front, and a lamppost nearly landed in our garden after the impact.

“We saw someone running from the scene in the direction of the Hilltown.”

Police Scotland confirmed inquiries are ongoing to trace the driver of the Land Rover.

A spokeswoman said: “Around 2.25pm on Tuesday September 24 we received a report of a crash involving a car and a taxi on Hospital Street, Dundee.

“Scottish Ambulance Service were contacted and the 76-year-old female passenger of the taxi was taken to Ninewells Hospital as a precaution.

“The taxi driver did not require medical treatment.

“Inquiries are ongoing to trace the driver of the car.”
