Man, 66, dies after being found injured at Dunfermline landfill site

A man has died after being found injured at a landfill site near Dunfermline.

Emergency services were called to the Lochhead recycling centre at Wellwood, to the north of the city, on Wednesday afternoon.

A 66-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Workers at the site expressed their “devastation and shock” on Thursday morning.

The council facility is shut while an investigation takes place.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a man having been injured at a premises north of Wellwood, Dunfermline, around 4.30pm on Wednesday.

“Emergency services attended, however, the 66-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Inquiries are continuing and the Health and Safety Executive has been notified.”

An HSE spokesperson said: “We are aware and investigating alongside Police Scotland.”

Dunfermline landfill site remains closed after death

Cireco operates the recycling centre on behalf of Fife Council, who owns the site.

Robin Baird, chief executive of Cireco, said: “The Dunfermline recycling and waste disposal centre at Lochhead is currently closed following a fatal incident on site on Wednesday afternoon.

“This is a tragic situation. The thoughts of everyone at Cireco are with the family, friends and loved ones of our colleague at this very difficult time.

“We are supporting the police and the health and safety executive with their investigations and will not be able to comment further on the incident until those investigations have concluded.

“I hope everyone will understand that some disruption to service is inevitable at this time.

“We will update the public about the availability of recycling facilities as soon as possible.”

A Fife Council spokesperson said its teams are supporting colleagues at Cireco and will work with Police Scotland and the HSE as required.
