Selena Gomez got emotional during an episode of The Graham Norton Show Friday, as British comedian Miranda Hart opened up about how the actress’ documentary, Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me, helped her come to terms with her own chronic illness.

“It makes me quite emotional because when I saw your documentary on Apple about your illness struggles I was thinking do I share, is this something I should do?” Hart said, adding that the act made her feel vulnerable. “It’s not something I’ve done before and I watched your documentary and I just thought absolutely yes, and that’s what kept me writing.”

Gomez, who sat beside her Emilia Pérez co-star Zoe Saldana and Rwandan-Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa, welled up with emotion as Hart praised her soul-baring documentary. In Hart’s new book I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You, released Thursday, she revealed that she began suffering from conditions like bronchitis, tonsillitis, pericarditis, gastroenteritis, and labyrinthitis as early as her late teens. By 2020, after previous bouts of weakness, she was diagnosed with Lyme disease.

“I wasn’t in arenas as a pop star, but I was backstage at the BBC trying to go on [and] not knowing whether to go on,” Hart said during the talk show.

Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me delved into the actress’ battles with mental illness, lupus, and child stardom. Gomez told Rolling Stone in a 2022 cover story that she almost didn’t release the documentary.

“I’m just so nervous,” she said. “Because I have the platform I have, it’s kind of like I’m sacrificing myself a little bit for a greater purpose. I don’t want that to sound dramatic, but I almost wasn’t going to put this out. God’s honest truth, a few weeks ago, I wasn’t sure I could do it.”

In an interview with Vanity Fair last month, Gomez also shared that her health struggles also make it difficult for her to start a family. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she said. Instead, Gomez said she is considering alternatives like surrogacy and adoption.

Gomez will star in spinoff series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place on Oct. 29 on Disney Channel, and musical drama Emilia Pérez on Nov. 13 on Netflix.
