7 New Movies To Watch In October

October is a killer month for new movies.

September was a big month of movie releases, seeing the likes of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Will & Harper, and The Substance, but October will be even bigger. Between psychological thrillers, horror movies, romantic dramedies, and real-life-inspired storylines, there will be everything you need to come to a theater or streaming service near you. It’s What’s Inside (October 4)

Coming to Netflix on October 4, It’s What’s Inside is about a combo bachelor and bachelorette party, but instead of ending in partying, laughs, and good memories, this movie shows you the “for worse” you agree to in your vows. In the film, an uninvited guest shows up and brings a suitcase containing a life-changing game. However, this game isn’t the good type of life-changing but instead has all of the party-goers feeling like they are in hell.

Joker: Folie a Deux (October 4)

Joker: Folie a Deux is highly anticipated by the fact that Lady Gaga stars as Harley Quinn in this sequel to Joker. Joaquin Phoenix returns as the titular role who is struggling with his identity as Arthur Fleck and the sad, lonely clown he prefers to portray. Luckily for him, his life is about to change as he meets the love of his life, Harley, at Arkham State Hospital. This might be the origin story we have all been dying for from Joker and Harley, so buckle up, it’s going to get wild and be full of musical numbers.

Piece By Piece (October 11)

Alright, I know it’s a LEGO movie, BUT it’s also a Pharrell Williams movie! Piece By Piece is the documentary of Pharrell’s live as told by the square little toys we all know and hate to step on. From his childhood in Virginia to superstardom in both music and fashion, this cute take on a documentary will have you smiling, laughing, and maybe even crying as you follow Pharrell’s rise to fame.

We Live In Time (October 11)

I don’t know what it is, but something about the fall season is the perfect time to watch a romantic comedy and laugh and cry under blankets surrounded by autumnal candles. We Live In Time, starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, will satisfy all of those needs. It’s a very stereotypical boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, they have kids and live happily ever after type of story, but this one will also cover the hard times the couple faces. Rather than a fairytale, We Live In Time will show how couples struggle through different facets of life and really put to the test their vows of “through thick and thin”.

Smile 2 (October 18)

Smile 2 is the follow-up to Smile, a horror movie that took everyone by surprise and the horror world by storm. With such a unique and jarring premise, Smile 2 is expected to scare anyone into never wanting to lock eyes with a smiling stranger again. Smile 2 follows a pop star as she’s about to go on a huge tour, but right before she embarks, she witnesses the suicide of a man who just can’t stop smiling before he ends his life. Of course, if you’ve seen the first movie, you know what this means for the pop star, and it’s about to get really, really bad for her.

Woman Of The Hour (October 18)

Woman Of The Hour is Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut and it is a crime thriller based on a true story from the late 1970s. The story is about Rodney Alcala, a serial killer in the 1970s who was apprehended in 1979. However, before he was apprehended, he was one of the finalists on a dating show trying to win the love of one unlucky contestant while still simultaneously being an active serial killer. Kendrick aims to cover not only the crimes of Alcala but also how sexist the culture was during this time.

The Nickel Boys (October 25)

The Nickel Boys is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Colson Whitehead. The story follows two young Black men who are trying to survive life in the reform school known as Nickel Academy in Florida. While Nickel Academy isn’t real, it does quite closely resemble the real-life institution by the name of Dozier School. If you know anything about Dozier School, you know what happened there is incredibly tragic and reprehensible. We can expect The Nickel Boys to be a truly heart-wrenching film, so prepare yourself.
