A man is contesting charges relating to an alleged stabbing in Delacombe last year.

Jayde Higham, 26, appeared via a video link from prison at the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on Thursday for a committal mention.

Defence lawyer Andrew Madden said his client was contesting everything in relation to the matter, including Higham's identity.

Higham is charged with intentionally causing serious injury for his alleged involvement in stabbing a man in the chest about 12pm on December 10.

The Courier reported at the time police arrived at the Sutton Street address and found a man aged in his 20s with stab wounds. He was taken to the Ballarat Base Hospital.

Higham faces three more charges relating to the alleged incident including intentionally causing injury, unlawful assault with a knife and assault.

The Lake Gardens man was arrested the day after the alleged stabbing at Reservoir - about 130 kilometres away in Melbourne's northern suburbs - after a police search to locate him.

Magistrate Ron Saines gave permission to Higham's defence counsel to cross-examine two witnesses to the alleged stabbing, but refused an application to cross-examine two child witnesses.

One police member is expected to give evidence while the defence may make an application to cross-examine a forensic expert.

A contested committal hearing was set down at the Ballarat Magistrates' Court in June.

Higham was remanded in custody until May where will return to court for a contested mention and plea hearing on other unrelated charges.
