New AI presets and other improvements in Google Photos simplify video editing

The Google Photos app for iOS and Android has gained new presets powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and other improvements that simplify video editing.

One of the best use cases for AI is automated video editing, and now Google is adding AI-powered video editing features to its Photos app on iOS and Android.

Aside from AI presets, the refresh software brought other perks in for its redesigned video editor, such as an updated trim tool, a new speed tool to create a slow-motion video or speed it up, and a new Auto Enhance feature.

The improved Google Photos video editor was announced earlier this week by a company employee on the Google Photos forums. It may take some time for it to reach all users, so try later if you don’t see them. To ensure you have the latest version, open the Google Photos App Store page and click the Update button.

Google Photos gains AI video editing presets and more

AI presets automatically trim your videos to the best part, add appropriate effects like slow-mo or zoom, and apply tweaks like dynamic motion tracking to a particular subject. Hit the Presets tab below the video timeline to get started.

Video trimming has been improved as well. I’ve always disliked trimming footage in Google Photos because the controls were imprecise. I’m glad Google has fixed this with precision controls. Now I can precisely cut the footage I want!

I like the magic wand in Apple’s Photos app. With a single click, it applies light and color corrections that make a video pop. Google Photos has something similar in the form of a new Auto Enhance button. It works pretty much the same as Apple’s magic wand, enhancing the colors in your footage, but with an added benefit—the tool stabilizes your video, too. To use it, hit Enhance when editing your video.

The new Speed tool

And last but not least, the new Speed tool lets you create a slow-motion video or a sped-up version. You can “dial up the action or create dramatic slow-mo.” Open the video and hit the Edit button, then choose the Speed option. You can now speed up your video by choosing 2x or 4x or slow it down by selecting ¼x or ½x.

AI video presets should be available today in Google Photos for iOS and Android. The new Auto Enhance button, the updated Trim tool and the new Speed tool will hit Android first, then come to iOS.
