Apple to announce M4 Macs next week without a dedicated event

Christian Zibreg ∙ October 24, 2024

Apple will have some important announcements next week, but there doesn’t seem to be a dedicated press event to unveil M4 Macs.

Apple’s head of worldwide marketing, Greg Joswiak, teased on his X account “an exciting week of announcements ahead, starting on Monday morning.” He accompanied the post with a short video showing a Happy Mac icon transforming into an Apple logo in the same color gradient used in Apple Intelligence marketing.

Apple will also release iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 on Monday, bringing the first Apple Intelligence features to iPhones, iPads and Macs.

Many Apple blogs (us included) have been bracing for a dedicated event in October. However, Apple seems to have tweaked its strategy; the new iPad mini 7 was announced earlier this week with a simple press release and a quiet website update.

Apple will unveil M4 Macs next week

Fans have been expecting new M4-powered MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac computers since Apple debuted the M4 chip in the new iPad Pro in May. There have been no M4-related announcements since then, but that’s about to change.

The next Mac mini could receive the most meaningful upgrade of all systems. It’s said to receive a substantial redesign, sporting a much smaller enclosure with no USB-A ports to help shrink it to roughly the Apple TV size.

MacBook Pro and iMac should receive a spec bump. All new M4 Macs should have 16GB of unified memory as standard across the board because Apple Intelligence alone requires 8GB of RAM.

Other hardware updates seem less likely. For example, the Apple TV streaming box was last updated in October 2022 with Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, but there have been no rumors or leaks suggesting a successor could be looming on the horizon.

As for the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said these workstations will get their M4-themed updates in 2025. He also predicted the next MacBook Air featuring an M4 chip will arrive around spring 2025.
