The failed assassination attempts of former US president Donald Trump have been described by his wife as "miracles".

Former US first lady Melania Trump gave a sit-down interview to Fox News ahead of the release of her memoir, Melania.

"I believe it was the time that I tell my story and the truth because a lot of misinformation and falsehoods written about me and I want to put the record straight and people can learn some things that were never discussed and I hope they enjoy the book."

In the interview, Melania Trump said she supported her husband in running for the US presidency once again, saying "I know how passionate he is to make America great again".

She had been watching it on TV, pausing it to do some work just before the shooting occurred. She was then called by her chief of staff and told about it.

"I ran to the TV and I rewinded and I watched it. I was only a few minutes behind and something, I guess, looked over me so I didn't really see live live but maybe three minutes, few minutes later but when I saw it, you know, nobody really knew yet because when you see him on the floor and you don't know, you don't know what really happened."

She said she was able to talk to her husband while he was on his way to the hospital but found telling son Barron about the incident "very, very difficult".

For the second attempt at Trump International Golf Club, Melania Trump was in New York.

"I called again and he was okay because Secret Service were great, the guys that were with him were fantastic and I think both of the events, they were really miracles, if you think about it. The July 13 was a miracle how that much and he could not be with us.

"I think something was watching over him. It's almost like the country really needs him."

In the interview, Melania Trump accused the mainstream media and opposition of "fuelling the toxic atmosphere" surrounding her husband.

"This needs to stop. The country needs to unite and I encourage everybody to read my letter that I wrote on July 14 again because that cannot continue."

She described Donald Trump as a "family man".

"He loves his family, he loves his country and all he wants ... to be better and prosperous."

She said America had suffered under the current administration.

"Economy, it's really not great. Inflation is high and if we compare these four years under this administration compared to four years under my husband as commander in chief, he was leading the country through … strength. The border was safer than ever before, we didn't have any wars, people were prospering, they had jobs, they could support their families.

"I think American people need to decide what they really want.

"It's all in American people's hands on November 5th."
