Former St Bede's College worker charged with historic sex offences against students

A former staff member of Christchurch boys school St Bede's College has been charged with historical sexual offending against students.
The man was facing four charges of assaulting a boy between 12 and 16 and three charges of indecent assault on a man/boy over 16.
The charges related to offending against three St Bede's boarders about 20 years ago.
Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Simmons said police believed the accused man targeted boarders and the investigators were trying to determine if there was any further offending that had not been reported to police.
"Police are making contact with students who boarded at the school over the identified period of time," she said.
"We know it can be incredibly hard and at times distressing to report or talk about incidents of this nature, but we would like to reassure any victims of sexual offending we take these matters seriously.
"We have a number of officers and detectives dedicated to these cases, and we will ensure you have a safe space to report offending in confidence."
St Bede's College rector Jon McDowall said the school was working with police.
"Any form of abuse is not acceptable and has no place in our college. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and survivors of the alleged indecent assault," he said.
"We are committed to supporting our men of the past and providing a safe environment for our current and future students."
The man was due to appear at the Christchurch District Court on 5 November.
