Otago flooding: What know about evacuation centres, road closures and forecasts

More rain is on the way for an already soaked Otago where homes were evacuated and streets flooded overnight.

If life or property is threatened always dial 111 for Police, Fire or Ambulance. Local authorities are responsible for civil defence emergency management in their area.

A state of emergency has been declared in Dunedin and a red rain warning for North Otago, Dunedin and coastal Clutha was not due to expire until 9pm Friday.

Here's what you need to know:

Evacuation centres

The initial evacuation centre at St Clair Golf Club was full.

Forsyth Barr Stadium was opened up for anyone needing to leave their home. Enter the Stadium centre at gate J, there was plenty of parking and pets were welcome.

Road closures

At least 22 streets in Dunedin were closed due to flooding. People can check the city's road closures on the council's website.

State Highway 87 Kyeburn to Hyde was closed until further notice, due to flooding.

SH 88 Forsyth Barr Stadium to Port Chalmers was closed due to a landslide. Waka Kotahi warned people to delay their journey or consider an alternate route.

SH 90 Waikoikoi to Tapanui was closed due to flooding and a detour was in place.

Speed was reduced to 30km/h on SH 96 at the intersection of Brown Road due to flooding.

All Dunedin buses were cancelled on Friday morning until further notice.

Sandbags

Sandbags were available from at the Ice Stadium in South Dunedin, Memorial Park carpark in Mosgiel, and the showgrounds in Middlemarch.

Polytech Closed

It's already school holidays for younger students.

Otago Polytechnic announced its Dunedin Campus would be closed Friday.

Forecast

MetService is forecasting the heavy rain will ease by Friday night.

The red heavy rain warning was due to expire at 9pm.
