A man previously charged with wounding a man who died after an assault on Wellington's nightlife strip is now also facing a charge of manslaughter.

The 29-year-old accused, whose name is surpressed, is due in court on Monday in relation to the death of Luke Smith two weeks ago.

Smith, who was 21, died in hospital when his life support was removed.

The police said at the time that he was assaulted around 3am on Courtenay Place.

Smith and his parents had emigrated to New Zealand from South Africa earlier this year and settled in Upper Hutt, police said.

By last week $22,000 had been raised to help pay for the return of his body to South Africa.
