Ours is the law, not personal qualms – Afenyo-Markin on Supreme Court injunction

by · MyNewsGh.com

Amid rising tensions between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has made a firm appeal for all parties to respect the recent Supreme Court ruling.

The Supreme Court on Friday, October 18, 2024, directed Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to suspend his decision declaring four parliamentary seats vacant. This ruling, which has significant political implications, comes at a critical time, as both parties battle to maintain influence in Parliament ahead of the 2024 elections.

Afenyo-Markin, addressing the issue, stressed that the NPP’s position is not personal but rooted in the rule of law. “The court has determined the matter and has ordered the parties to file the necessary processes for the final determination of the matter. That is it. So we expect our colleagues and all those involved in this matter to respect the law, including the Right Honorable Speaker. We don’t have any personal qualms with anybody. Ours is the law,” he remarked, calling for civility amidst the legal and political back-and-forth.

The NPP is particularly concerned about what it perceives as a strategy by the NDC to leverage legal avenues to disrupt the balance of power in Parliament. The Supreme Court’s intervention offers the ruling party a momentary reprieve, but the broader battle for parliamentary control rages on. For the NPP, maintaining a strong majority in Parliament is crucial to its legislative agenda and its prospects in the upcoming elections.

In his speech, Afenyo-Markin went beyond the immediate legal issue, urging his party members to stay focused on the larger task ahead—winning the 2024 elections. He acknowledged that while the Akufo-Addo government may not be perfect, it has made notable strides that should not be overshadowed by internal or external challenges. “Let’s go all out to work hard.

President Akufo-Addo has done a Yeoman’s job. Of course, we don’t have a perfect government, but we have elections to win. If we go all out and win massively, this NDC behavior will be a thing of the past,” he stated, rallying the party to stay united in the face of adversity.

For now, the Supreme Court’s ruling has paused what could have been a significant political shift. But with elections on the horizon and parliamentary control still in question, the coming months will test the resolve of both the NPP and the NDC. Afenyo-Markin’s emphasis on the rule of law may help temper immediate tensions, but the underlying political contest continues to shape Ghana’s future.
