Maharashtra Mumbai Live News Updates: Following his father’s footsteps, Zeeshan Siddique joined the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Friday morning. The party also announced him as their candidate from Bandra East. After receiving the ticket Siddique said, “Congress leaders and Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders were in touch with me in the past few days…but they intended to deceive.” The former Congress MLA further added that he would not comment on Congress as “they always come under the pressure of Shiv Sena (UBT).”

Former Congress MLA: Zeeshan had won the seat in the 2019 Assembly election as a Congress candidate. However, the Congress later expelled him. In this polls, he goes up against Varun Sardesai of the Shiv Sena (UBT). His participation in Ajit Pawar’s party raises speculations about his political allegiance, since he had previously stated he would remain with Congress despite his father’s shift to the NCP.

Zeeshan VS Varun: Where in 2019 Zeeshan had won the Bandra East seat in the Assembly election as a Congress candidate and holds a rich legacy of dynasty politics from his father Late Baba Siddique, former NCP leader, Varun Sardesai has the Pawar legacy behind him as he makes his electoral debut in seat.

Mumbai News Live Updates: For second consecutive day, Mumbai hottest city in state at 35.5 °C

Meanwhile, for the second consecutive day, Mumbai sizzled at above normal temperatures with the maximum temperatures soaring 35.5 °C, making it the hottest city of Maharashtra on Thursday. While citizens may continue to experience the heat today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that temperatures are slated to witness a dip over the weekend.

Marking a departure of 1.3 °C above the normal, IMD's Santacruz station recorded a maximum temperature of 35.5 °C on Thursday while the Colaba coastal observatory logged 34.9 °C. This came along the heels of the city warming up at 35.8 °C on Wednesday.

Amid the spike, data procured from the weather bureau reflected that Mumbai has seen the highest day temperatures in the entire state of Maharashtra, for two consecutive days now.

Meteorologists have attributed the hot and humid conditions to the influx of easterlies, which are a result of the changing wind directions owing to the withdrawal of the south west monsoon.

Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD Mumbai told The Indian Express that the temperatures are likely to see a drop from Saturday. "Currently, we are receiving easterlies and there are also moist winds, owing to which the discomfort level and temperatures are high. While temperatures may remain in the similar range on Friday, it is likely to see a small dip from Saturday. This is due to the influx of northerlies which we are expecting," said Nair.

In a big relief for citizens, IMD has forecast that the maximum temperatures could see a dip of up to 32 degrees Celsius from October 28.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Ajit Pawar NCP's second candidate list, who all to contest alongside Zeeshan Siddique

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Ajit Pawar on Friday morning announced its second list of seven candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Zeeshan Siddique is set to contest from Bandra (East), among other announcements, Sana Malik, the daughter of MLA Nawab Malik, will contest from her father’s constituency Anushaktinagar. Her missing name from the party’s first list had raised eyebrows as the BJP had clarified that it would not be campaigning for Malik.

Nawab Malik is likely to contest as an Independent from the neighbouring Shivaji Nagar-Mankhurd Assembly seat against Abu Azmi of the Samajwadi Party.

The NCP also gave tickets to former BJP MPs Sanjaykaka Patil (Sangli) and Pratap Patil-Chikhalikar (Nanded). They will contest from Tasgaon-Kavathe Mahankal and Loha Assembly seats, respectively.

The NCP emerged on top in the tussle with the BJP over Pune’s Vadgaon-Sheri Assembly seat with NCP’s sitting MLA Sunil Tingre set to re-contest from the seat. The BJP was keen on nominating former MLA Jagdish Mulik from the constituency.

The NCP also named Nishikant Patil as its candidate in Islampur, where he will take on NCP (SP) state chief Jayant Patil, and Dyaneshwar Katke as its candidate from Shirur, where he will take on NCP (SP)’s Ashok Pawar.

The Assembly elections in Maharashtra will be held on November 20 and results will be declared on November 23.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Pawar VS Pawar in Assembly elections

Meanwhile, setting the stage for another Pawar versus Pawar battle, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP on Thursday fielded Yugendra Pawar from the Baramati Assembly constituency, pitting him against his uncle and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Yugendra is the son of Ajit Pawar’s elder brother Sriniwas Pawar.

The announcement came as state NCP (SP) chief Jayant Patil declared the party’s first list of 45 candidates on Thursday. The party announced Yugendra’s candidature from Baramati a day after the NCP declared that Ajit Pawar, who had in the run-up to the elections on November 20 indicated his reluctance to contest from Baramati — a seat he has won seven consecutive times and never lost in the last 30 years — would also contest from the seat.

“The decision to field Yugendra from Baramati was taken following demands by the local party cadre. He is young and educated, and a fresh face was preferred,” Patil said, while expressing confidence of the party winning the seat.

Earlier in August, then Opposition Congress MLA Zeeshan Siddique was under scrutiny for alleged cross-voting in the legislative council election as he joined Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s Jansamvad Yatra at Bandra East assembly constituency.

Siddique’s appearance at the event was seen as an indication of an impending shift in his political allegiance, especially since his father, former MLA Late Baba Siddique, had already joined the NCP.

Regarding the upcoming assembly elections, Siddique had confirmed his intention to run, saying, “I had sent a representative to the Congress office to collect the nomination form, but it was not provided. While I am not naming any party at this moment, I want to clarify that I will contest the upcoming election and reclaim my MLA seat.”

Mumbai News Live Updates: How did Zeeshan make the candidate list

In the first list of 38 candidates released by NCP, Ajit Pawar had chosen caution, going with most of the sitting MLAs and ministers who picked his NCP faction over uncle Sharad Pawar’s. This will quash talk that there is discontent within the faction led by him, and that senior NCP leaders were considering switching to Pawar Senior.

However, earlier one of the prominent names that was missing from the NCP list was of Zeeshan Siddique.

While he won the 2019 Assembly election from Bandra East as a Congress candidate, Zeeshan was expected to move to the NCP like his father Baba Siddique. But after the murder of Baba Siddique, which happened under the Mahayuti government’s watch, Zeeshan was reportedly being urged by his supporters to remain with the Congress.

In response to the expulsion Siddique took to X and said: 88,517 mumbai youth congress members voted for me to become the president of mumbai youth congress which has been the highest number in the history of mumbai youth congress. This isn’t a nominated post I have got from lobbying or being a yes man to leaders, I have been ELECTED with the highest margin in the election process. After giving 12 years to the organisation having fought three elections it is unfortunate that I have not received any official intimation from the party and I have to learn about my ousting from media and social media. I am answerable to 88,517 who voted for me and I will be addressing a press conference about this very soon!
