Israel-Iran Conflict Live Updates: WHO chief warns of ‘catastrophic’ conditions in northern Gaza hospitals amid severe shortages

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has issued a stark warning that the situation in northern Gaza is “catastrophic” amid “intensive” operations taking place around and within healthcare facilities.

Posting on X on Saturday, he said that “a critical shortage of medical supplies, coupled with severely restricted access, is depriving people of life-saving care” in the northern part of the Palestinian territory.

His comments followed the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza earlier on Saturday, a day after they stormed the facility. The siege “came at a heavy cost,” Tedros noted.

The WHO chief reported that 44 male hospital staff members were detained, leaving only female staff, the hospital director, and one male doctor to care for nearly 200 patients “in urgent need of medical attention.”

“Reports of hospital facilities and medical supplies being damaged or destroyed during the siege are deplorable,” Tedros wrote.

The entire health system in Gaza has been under attack for more than a year. WHO cannot emphasise strongly enough that hospitals must be protected from conflict at all times. Any attack on healthcare facilities constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.
