J&K Assembly Election Result Live: With counting of votes set to begin at 8 am amid heavy security, today’s poll verdict will bring Jammu and Kashmir its first elected government since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.  The overall voter turnout for the three phases of J&K elections — its first in a decade — came to 63.45 per cent, settling just under the 2014 mark, but much more than the figures seen during the Lok Sabha polls months ago.

What exit polls say? The exit polls predicted that no party may cross the 46-seat majority mark in 90-member House. However, four pollsters — Dainik Bhaskar, India Today – C Voter, Peoples Pulse and Axis My India — gave the edge to the Congress-National Conference, projecting at least 35 seats for the alliance. This was followed by the BJP, which is expected to win at least 20 seats, and the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) with 4-7 seats. The exit polls also showed two broad trends — the near decimation of the PDP, and the BJP managing to hold on to its seats in the Jammu region.

Throwback to 2014 poll results: The J-K Assembly polls that were held in 2014 proved the most competitive in a decade for the then state. The PDP emerged as the single-largest party with 28 seats (all in Kashmir province), though falling far short of the majority mark of 44 in the 87-member House. The BJP followed with 25 seats — all in the Jammu region — and was part of a coalition government with the PDP. The Farooq Abdullah-led NC won 15 seats and the Congress, an NC ally until the 2014 Lok Sabha polls held earlier that year, won 12 seats.
