Trump's victory, fueled by voter discontent over the economy and border security, marks a stunning political comeback. Harris has accepted the results but encourages supporters to continue fighting for their beliefs. Trump will soon begin selecting key staff for his upcoming term, with his inauguration set for January 20.

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Italy to change web tax in bid to overcome US objections
Italy has extended its domestic tax on digital services to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to try to overcome U.S. objections that the levy is discriminatory, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said on Thursday.
Washington has threatened tariffs over unilateral digital taxes in Europe, as they mainly target U.S. tech companies such as Meta Platforms, Google, and Amazon .
Italy in 2019 introduced a 3% levy on revenue from internet transactions for digital companies with annual sales of at least 750 million euros ($809 million) if at least 5.5 million are made in Italy.
Now, as part of the government's 2025 budget, the Treasury plans to remove these minimum conditions, aiming to raise 51.6 million euros on top of the current revenue of 400 million.

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Europe urges Trump to support Ukraine, avoid trade wars
European leaders meeting in Budapest on Thursday urged Donald Trump from afar to avoid trade wars, maintain support for Ukraine and to refrain from unsettling the global order following his victory in the U.S. presidential election.
Trump's win is a major challenge for Europe, opening an era of huge uncertainty at a time when the continent is already grappling for unity and its two biggest powers, Germany - whose government just broke apart - and France, are weakened.
Trump's relationship with his European peers was tense and rocky for much of his first term, and his return to power brings uncertainty over U.S. backing for Ukraine against Russia's invasion, the U.S. commitment to the NATO military alliance and the prospect of tariffs on exports to the United States.

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Hungary's Orban gears up to be Europe's 'Trump whisperer'
As much of Europe frets over the return of Donald Trump, Hungary's Viktor Orban is in a jubilant mood.
"A much needed victory for the World!" the Hungarian nationalist leader wrote on X minutes after Trump declared victory.
Orban hopes his close personal ties with Trump will elevate his standing in a politically fractious Europe and bolster support for his far-right allies, at a time when he faces serious headwinds at home.
On Thursday, he got to take centre stage as the host of a summit in Budapest of European leaders, many of whom are concerned at what Trump means for Ukraine, NATO and global trade. (Reuters)

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Trump win worries international partners ahead of COP29 climate summit
Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election has darkened the outlook for a strong deal at the COP29 global climate summit next week and will heap pressure on Europe and China to lead international progress in curbing planetary warming, according to climate negotiators.
Trump, who has called climate change a hoax, has said he plans to withdraw the US from the landmark 2015 Paris climate agreement at the start of his second presidency, and his policy advisors have floated removing the US from the underlying UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) ratified by the US Senate in 1992.
Climate negotiators and observers preparing for the COP29 conference from Nov. 11-22 in Baku, Azerbaijan, said Trump's decisive win over Vice President Kamala Harris in Tuesday's poll deals a blow to the ability of countries to agree on a new global finance target or increase the pool of countries that should contribute – top goals for the summit.
The EU and US had planned to push China and rich Gulf states to start paying into UN climate funds.
"Pushing for more ambitious climate finance is going to be almost impossible without the U.S. buy-in, which will de-motivate developing countries from taking seriously the climate ambitions of the West," said Elisabetta Cornago, a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform. (Reuters)

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Civil rights groups vow to fight harder for racial equality
Donald Trump's US presidential election victory has sent shockwaves through Black American communities, which voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris despite a campaign by her Republican rival to court Black men.
While Trump made gains among Black Americans in North Carolina and some in the community celebrated his win, nationally his vote share among Black voters was unchanged in the Tuesday vote from 2020, according to an exit poll conducted by Edison Research, which showed a much larger swing towards Trump among Hispanic voters.
Black voters were important to President Joe Biden's victory over Trump in 2020, when Harris was also elected as the first Black and first Asian-American U.S. vice president. Had she won on Tuesday, Harris would have become the United States' first woman president.
A majority of the two dozen Black Americans who spoke to Reuters for this story said they feared a second Trump term, including a rollback of civil rights after his pledge to end federal diversity and inclusion programs.
Many said his rhetoric, including racist and sexist language, proved he does not have the best interests of Black Americans at heart. (Reuters)

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Trump win casts doubt on future of Mexico's migrant caravan
Thousands of migrants traveling together in a caravan in Mexico are grappling with their next steps after former U.S. President Donald Trump, who ran on an anti-immigration platform, was propelled to victory for a second term.
After hearing Trump had won, many migrants in the caravan of about 3,000 people which started in the southern city of Tapachula on Tuesday, felt less hopeful about their chance at a new life in the United States.
"I had hoped (Kamala Harris) would win, but that didn't happen," said Valerie Andrade, a Venezuelan migrant traveling with the caravan from Chiapas to Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
Andrade, along with her husband, and like over 7 million other Venezuelans, left their crisis-ridden country seeking better prospects.

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: US farmers back Trump but face pain from China tariff threats
US farmers want something from President-elect Donald Trump that his trade policies mean he is unlikely to deliver: increased access to the market of top soy-importer China.
Trump's Republican party enjoys wide support across the U.S. farm belt, where he won most states in Tuesday's election. Farmers typically back him even though the U.S. agriculture sector was one of the hardest hit during the U.S.-China trade war that Trump fought during his first administration.
China targeted the U.S. farm community with retaliatory tariffs on imports of American agricultural goods, after Trump imposed tariffs on a wide range of goods from China. U.S. soy exports to China have never recovered - in fact, China has slashed its dependence on U.S. farm goods since the 2018 trade war. (Reuters)

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Rupee hits record low on equity outflows, strong dollar outlook
The Indian rupee fell to its weakest level on record on Thursday, hurt by outflows from local equities and on expectations that Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential race may boost the dollar going forward.
The rupee fell to an all-time low of 84.3775 during the session before ending at 84.3725, down 0.1% from its Wednesday's close at 84.28, its previous record low.
While most Asian currencies rose on Thursday and the dollar index dipped 0.2% to 104.9, the rupee was unable to benefit due to strong dollar demand from foreign banks, likely on behalf of custodial clients, traders said.
Foreign investors are "pulling out yet again," keeping the rupee under pressure, a foreign exchange salesperson at a large overseas bank said. (Reuters)

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: How Michigan, a state that chose Trump, became a hub of Arab voters
Michigan’s political landscape is increasingly shaped by a diverse coalition of voters whose choices often determine the US presidential election. Among them, Black voters and the state’s sizeable Arab American population are crucial, particularly amid growing discontent over the Joe Biden administration’s handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict. Recent polling from late September and early October signalled that former US President Donald Trump was gaining ground among Arab American voters, with a narrow lead over Vice-President Kamala Harris – an outcome confirmed by results on Wednesday with Trump leading with 49.8% votes.
Home to one of the largest and most diverse Arab American communities in the US, Michigan is also one of the few states that officially recognises Arab Americans as an ethnic and underserved group—underscoring the political significance of this electorate.
The origins of Arab migration to Michigan
The story of Arab Americans in Michigan begins at the dawn of the 20th century, shaped by economic opportunity, industrial growth, and the strategic vision of one man — Henry Ford. Prior to the 1920s, the area that would become Detroit was relatively quiet, a far cry from the bustling industrial hub it would soon become. It all changed when Ford, seeking labour for his newly relocated Ford Motor Company, turned to immigrants from the Middle East to fill his factories. Read more

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: The American left-liberal is neither left nor liberal | Opinion
At the end of a major political loss, in India as in America, the search begins for a scapegoat. By any reckoning, the 2024 US election is a disaster for the Democrats. They have lost the presidency – and likely the popular vote along with the electoral college – as well as both Houses of the legislature.
Who is to blame? Joe Biden, for staying around too long? Kamala Harris, who was unable – despite huge financial backing and her party rallying behind her – to repeat the 2020 performance? Or is it, as so many are already lamenting, the American people, whose latent misogyny has led them, twice, to pass over a qualified woman for President? Even without the granular details of the election results, it is clear that the “basket of deplorables” argument is an eyewash. Those who voted for Biden in 2020, especially in the swing states, did not do so for Harris. And calling voters names makes for neither good strategy nor robust analysis.
Beyond the current moment, and beyond the US, there are lessons from Harris’s loss – and Trump’s victory. At the heart of these is the fact that voters — especially the “undecided” middle that determines poll outcomes — are drawn more to authenticity and clarity (even if it seems rude and revanchist) than virtue signalling. The latter makes the hypocrisies that are inevitable for those in government look all the more stark. Read more

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: As an Indian student in America, I witnessed Trump 1.0. I’m glad I left before Trump 2.0 | Opinion
I remember November 8, 2016, like it was yesterday. Sitting pretty in the Blue state of New York, with Hillary Clinton’s projected chances of winning the presidency at a 71.4 per cent high, my college campus was abuzz with plans for watch parties and after parties. As a student body that identifies as at least 60 per cent liberal, and politically active across the board, support for Clinton was visible in blue streamers, blue snacks, blue t-shirts and even painted faces.
Preparation for election day had begun months in advance. With Democrat Bernie Sanders’ visit in April 2016, there was greater vigour among politically active students to encourage everyone to vote. And days before the ill-fated D-day, political student organisations set up stalls all over the dining areas, with blue-and-red candy as bait, to appeal to the maximum number of students to “exercise your right as a citizen”. Buses were also arranged for voters in-state. After all, we were in “the greatest democracy in the world”. Read more

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Will a woman ever be a US President ? The lingering question
As Kamala Harris conceded defeat, the question that lingers over minds of several people in America is whether a woman will ever become US president. Harris is the second woman to be defeated by Trump and during her campaign, the president-elect has made several misogynistic remarks against her.
“I’m terrified by him, to be honest,” Nicole Saylor, an independent voter in Hendersonville, North Carolina told The New York Times. “And I’m terrified that I live in a country where 51% of the people voted for someone who is bigoted and misogynistic. I’m terrified that half of the country thinks it’s OK.”

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: In Trump, stronger and bigger, America has chosen The Great Disruption | Opinion
The American electorate has, decisively, chosen to trust their destiny in the hands of Donald Trump. From being written off after January 6, 2020, Trump now owns, not just the Republican Party, but the United States of America. The USA is now Trump country. He has won one of the broadest racial social coalitions for the Republicans; the shift in Hispanic votes, for example, is quite remarkable. Prima facie, Trump had so many disadvantages: Allegedly, the baggage of January 6, indictments and age. He had prominent businessmen like Elon Musk on his side, but he was outspent by the Democrats. So this is not a win that can be put down to oligarchic manipulation.
Three meta-narratives hurt the Democrats. It is a fact that American foreign policy was seen to fail on Joe Biden’s watch: The world is now on the brink of two globally interconnected wars. In both those wars, America did not achieve any objective in its national interest. The war in the Middle East was a double blow to the Democrats. On the one hand, they were tainted with supporting genocide that stripped away whatever sliver of moral high ground they might want to occupy on other issues: What is the ominous threat of the mass deportation Trump promised in comparison to abetting a horrific war that has left forty thousand dead? Benjamin Netanyahu made the Biden administration look both complicit and weak. Domestically, the war produced a sense of disenchantment in both parties: Those who are pro-Israel and those who fear anti-Semitism recoiled at the prospect of street protests; Arab-American recoiled at the complicity in the war. Trump’s claim is not that he is anti-war, but that the wars would not have happened in the first place. This is not an anti-war vote. But the war became a sign of the Democrats’ utter lack of credibility. Read more on Pratap Bhanu Mehta's coloumn

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Here's what Shashi Tharoor says on Trump presidency and India
In conversation with Manoj C G, Chief of National Political Bureau, The Indian Express, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, "For India, of course, Trump is a known commodity. We have had four years experience with him as President. So, I don’t expect any major surprises. He is a figure with a mercurial temperament and we have to brace for occasional statements that may be uncomfortable. But, on the other hand, we have a very good chemistry between him and our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), who was perhaps among the first world leaders to congratulate him even before he was reported to have crossed the 270 mark.
As soon as it was gauged that Trump was likely to win, Modi issued that rather fulsome tweet with a picture of him hugging Trump. That is a reminder that there is a friendship. US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: No confidence that Trump will give right attention to climate emergency, says expert
Donald Trump's victory in the US elections has triggered mixed reactions from climate change experts. The United States under Trump in his last term, had announced its intent to exit the Paris Climate Agreement and cast doubt on global climate efforts.
Dr Gufran Beig, founder director of System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR)—Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, and Chair Professor of National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, told The Indian Express that efforts will have to be redoubled to support climate action. With Trump's return to power for a second term, his approach to climate policy is poised to impact global climate cooperation.
"It will be hard for climate scientists, considering Trump's earlier views about climate change being a hoax. It is known that the US drives the climate change agenda. Now, we need to redouble our efforts to tackle these challenges," Dr Beig said.
When contacted, Aarti Khosla, director of Climate Trends, a research-based and capacity-building initiative, told The Indian Express that Trump’s actions on climate policy last time and his decision to make US withdraw from the Paris agreement give no confidence that he will give the right attention that climate emergency requires.
"The world is different from the last time he came to power. Climate impacts have ravaged every part of the world, and climate change is much more visible as a determinant of global chaos. The COP in Baku is going to start under a very challenging political context, one in which the US will not have a mandate or political will. It may lead to further lack of progress on important elements like hiking cash for climate action, and may create more impediments than solutions on contentious matters like trade, given Trump's protectionist stance," Khosla said.

US Presidential Election Results 2024 LIVE: Policy fixes, Trump's plan to overhaul global order, Raja Mohan writes on what India needs to focus on
If President Donald Trump’s first term is any guide, India may appear well placed to deal with his second stint at the White House. But the past is not necessarily a guide to the future, and Delhi will have to take a close look at the implications of Trump’s ambitious agenda for the second term.
To be sure, there is a good rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump. Modi’s key advisers will be familiar with many of the new officials who are likely to staff the senior positions in the Trump Administration. And there are many convergences between the worldview of the Modi government and the Trump team. The problem, however, comes from the radical nature of Trump’s policy framework that breaks away from the many familiar features of the global economic and political order.
Dealing with Trump’s second term is not just about finding policy fixes for the many divergences that are bound to emerge between Delhi and Washington. It demands coming to terms with Trump’s plans to overhaul the global order and the US role in it.
