Knife-wielding carjacker arrested after early morning incident in Dublin

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a man's car was hijacked on the Belgard Road in Dublin at around 2.45am

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a hijacking incident on the Belgard Road in Dublin in the early hours of Friday morning which saw a man arrested.

At approximately 2.45am, a man was stopped in his car at traffic lights in the Clondalkin area when he was approached by another man brandishing a knife.

This man entered the vehicle and forced the driver to drive to another location. The driver subsequently made his escape from the car and reported the incident to Gardaí.

Gardaí located the car unoccupied and a suspect, a man aged in his 30s, was arrested nearby.

The man is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 in a Garda station in west Dublin.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward, particularly those who may have camera footage of the incident.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Any person who was travelling on the Belgard Road or the Clondalkin area this morning between 2am and 3am is asked to contact investigating Gardaí.

"Additionally, road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station 01-6667600, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda station." A Garda spokesperson confirmed that investigations are ongoing following the arrest.
