M50 and Port Tunnel tolls set to increase from next year

by · Irish Mirror

Toll charges for vehicles travelling along both the M50 and Port Tunnel will be increased starting from next year.

Cars, buses, coaches, and lighter goods vehicles that do not have a tag or video account will be hit with a 10-cent increase on the M50, Transport Infrastructure Ireland confirmed on Wednesday.

Heavy goods vehicles exceeding 10,000kg with a tag and video account will see a 10-cent increase while those without are set to be hit with a 20-cent increase, but cars registered with a tag or video account will not be affected by any increases.

The Port Tunnel charge will increase by €1 from €12 to €13 during the morning peak. TII said the increase has been introduced to manage traffic at peak times. The changes are set to increase on January 1, 2025.

They said: "The tolling arrangements at the Dublin Port Tunnel are intended to manage demand at peak times and ensure that HGV movements to and from Dublin Port are not impeded with additional traffic and congestion, (HGV’s travel toll-free through the Dublin Port Tunnel).

They added: "Given increased levels of traffic using Dublin Port Tunnel during the AM southbound peak, TII is increasing tolls during these peak hours for citybound traffic from €12 to €13. Off-peak charges remain unchanged from 2024 rates."

There are eight other toll roads on the National Road Network which are operated under a Public Private Partnership model and not directly by TII.

There will be no increase for cars on these roads (M1, M3, M4, M7/M8, M8, N18 Limerick Tunnel, and N25 Waterford) apart from the M4 Kilcock to Kinnegad where a 10 increase will come into force.

There will also be a 10-cent increase for buses, coaches and HGVs on these roads except for the M3 where HGVs not exceeding 3,500kg will not see any increase. Also, on the M4 Kilcock to Kinnegad, heavy goods vehicles exceeding 3,500kg will see a 20-cent increase.
