Met Eireann has issued a weather warning in advance of stormy conditions lashing parts of Ireland later today.

The east of the country is set to face the brunt of this incoming weather system, which is predicted to bring “heavy and thundery rain” with the potential for flooding.

A Status Yellow rain warning has been put in place for Carlow, Wexford and Wicklow from 6pm until midnight. It states: "Heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms. Possible impacts include localised flooding, travel disruption and hazardous travelling conditions."

Providing more detail about what this evening's weather has in store for us, the national forecaster said: "Showery outbreaks of rain will be heavy and thundery over Munster this afternoon. The rain will spread northwards across the country during the afternoon and evening, turning heavy at times, particularly in the south and southeast, where there is potential for localised flooding. Mild and humid with highest temperatures of 13C to 16C , in a light to moderate southeasterly wind, occasionally fresh and gusty later.

"Tonight will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, heavy for a time in the northeast and east with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. There will be hill and coastal mist and fog too. Mild and humid with temperatures not falling below 11C to 14C, in a light to moderate southeasterly wind, occasionally fresh and gusty early in the night."

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, the weather is expected to remain unsettled with wet and breezy conditions at times, however temperatures will improve and are forecast to stay "above the October average".

Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect, Met Eireann said: "Wednesday morning will be mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain. This will linger in parts of the north and east through the day, but there will be a clearance to sunny spells and some showers across the south and west. Highest temperatures of 15C to 18C with light to moderate southerly winds. Any remaining cloud and rain will clear from the northeast early on Wednesday night and the rest of the night will be dry in most areas with clear spells and patches of mist and fog. However, there'll be showers in some western and southern areas, some heavy. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 12C in light to moderate southerly breezes.

"Mild on Thursday with sunny spells and scattered showers, some heavy with a chance of thunder. The showers will become isolated by evening. Highest temperatures of 13C to 16C in light to moderate southerly or westerly breezes. Mostly dry with clear spells early on Thursday night, however cloud and outbreaks of rain will move into the west and will spread eastwards across the country overnight. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 12C with moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds developing.

"Wet and breezy on Friday morning and afternoon as rain tracks eastwards across the country, turning heavy at times. A clearance to sunny spells and isolated showers in the west later in the afternoon will extend to all areas in the evening. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds, easing as the rain clears. Mostly dry Friday night with clear skies but there will be a few showers in the west and northwest. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 11C in a light to moderate southerly breeze.

"Most areas dry and bright on Saturday, although there will be some cloudier periods with showers too. A bit cooler than recent days with highs of 11C to 14C , in a light to moderate south to southwest wind.

"There is uncertainty in the forecast, but at the moment it looks like there'll be a spell of wet and windy weather on Saturday night and for a time on Sunday."
