Gardai in Cork have launched an investigation following an assault on a bus in Mayfield on the northside of the city this afternoon, which has led to the hospitalisation of a man with serious injuries.

The man was attacked on a bus that was travelling on Colmcille Avenue, between the Old Youghal Road and Middle Glanmire Road, at around 4pm today. It is believed that assault followed an encounter with two people on the bus.

The vehicle came to a stop a short distance away from the local Garda station. The man sustained serious head injuries in the incident and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transported to hospital.
