Erik ten Hag has been sacked by Manchester United following the club's 2-1 loss to West Ham over the weekend.

The result was the Red Devils' fourth Premier League defeat of the season and they they have won only one of their last eight games in all competitions.

In a statement on Monday, the club said: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.

“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

The focus will now switch to who will replace Ten Hag as permanent boss at Old Trafford, with Xavi Hernandez, Gareth Southgate, Thomas Frank and Fermanagh native Kieran McKenna, as well as interim manager Van Nistelrooy, among the names being linked with the job.

However, some United fans admit they would love to see Roy Keane appointed as manager, despite the fact he has not managed in his own right since leaving Ipswich in 2011.

One wrote on X: "Give it Roy Keane, he won’t stand for any nonsense and will ship all the rotten eggs out the door faster than the speed of light."

Another commented: "Only one man for the Man Utd job at this point…..Mr Roy Keane."

Someone else said: "Now for God sake don’t repeat the mistake of Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho, Ole, Rangnick and Ten Hag! APPOINT ROY KEANE NOW!!!"

"If I’m in the United board…I’d be giving it #RoyKeane till the end of the season…let him give those players some home truths before the next manager comes in!," read another comment.

Keane is as big as 200/1 with the bookies to be named United's next permanent manager and realistically it's incredibly unlikely that he will be considered for the role, but that won't stop fans wishing that he will.
