Both of Mr Quirke's sons became well-known figures in their own right - Wesley is married to Rosanna Davison, while Andy is the comedian and actor behind Damo and Ivor. A number of well-wishers posted messages of condolence to the Quirkes after Richard's passing.

One wrote: "It is with great sadness that I learned today of the passing of Richard. He was one of the kindest people you could ever hope to meet in a lifetime, and he had a deep spirituality and faith about him which he shared through humour and unfailing support for others. I knew him for almost thirty years and will miss him greatly."

Another said: "Condolences to Ann and all the family on the passing of Richard. We have many happy memories of his visits to Clare. May Richard have eternal rest."

And a third wrote: "I am so sorry and sad to hear the news of Richards passing. He was a wonderful man and I have so many fond memories of him growing up next door. He was a gent and had a great wit about him. Thinking of you all at this difficult and sad time. May he rest in peace."
