Gary Neville questions Man Utd fans' response to 'absolutely disgusting' Tottenham loss

Manchester United fell to a miserable defeat at home to Tottenham on Sunday and Gary Neville was left furious with the dreadful performance of Erik ten Hag's side

Gary Neville branded Manchester United's defeat to Tottenham 'absolutely disgusting' - as he slapped down fans who booed referee Chris Kavanagh.

United endured a miserable afternoon at Old Trafford on Sunday. They fell behind after just two minutes and 35 seconds, as Micky van de Ven burst forward from defence before setting Brennan Johnson up for a tap-in. Just before half-time things got even better for the visitors when United skipper Bruno Fernandes was sent off for serious foul play, though that decision was later questioned.

Moments into the second-half, Dejan Kulusevski doubled Tottenham's lead in acrobatic fashion as he lifted the ball into the net from Johnson's cross. And Dominic Solanke wrapped up the scoring with 13 minutes left when he slid in Pape Matar Sarr's header from a corner.

Neville was left furious with United's performance, insisting it was one of their worst under boss Erik ten Hag. And the former Red Devils skipper dismissed the boos Kavanagh faced at the final whistle.

"The pressure is going to get ramped up this week – it is going to be brutal. It has been a bad day for Ten Hag, really bad. It's one of the worst performances I have seen under Ten Hag - and that is saying something. It is really bad," he told Sky Sports.

"Brilliant for Tottenham - and we should say that first. For Manchester United, they are booing the ref, but that is not even half the story. In the first half they have put in their worst performance.

"The big story was that first half – it was not from nowhere – but they have chosen to put in their very worst performance. It was a disgusting performance in effort and quality and a lot of questions to answer from that group in the next week."

Neville warned United they must fix their issues quickly or their problems will soon grow. He admitted that a scoreline of 6-0 would have been a fair result as United's mentality came into question.

"I've been here enough times over the past 10 to 12 years so know that a result like this, something has to be sorted now. It'll just snowball if it doesn't get sorted. It's been a shocking, sobering day," Neville added. "I said there can be no excuses, there aren't that many injuries and a mountain of cash has been spent. It's woeful, it's as bad as it gets. You wouldn't have complained at all as a United fan if Spurs scored six because they have been so much better and had so many chances.

"It's an important day for both these teams in mid-table. But the pressure is going to be huge this week at Old Trafford and trying to convince the fans that they still have something to believe in going forward. It's been a bad day for Ten Hag, really bad.

"Thinking about his comments after the FC Twente game on Wednesday evening, when he said FC Twente wanted it more is quite alarming when a senior player of that stature says that. He's been around the block, Eriksen.

"It says there is an attitude problem in the squad."
