Earth’s 25 Vital Signs Hit Extremes, Indicate ‘Irreversible Climate Disaster’

Bhubaneswar: Around 25 out of 35 planetary vital signs that help in keeping a record of climate change every year has hit extreme levels, thereby indicating an ‘irreversible climate disaster’.

Extreme weather conditions, emissions from fossil are among the 25 vital signs, said a report by the international team of researchers from Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research, Germany.

In the analysis titled ‘The 2024 State of the Climate Report: Perilous Times on Planet Earth’, published in the journal Bioscience, the authors said that drastic climate change resulted in devastating heatwaves across Asia in 2024.

The ice cover in Greenland and Antarctic has become extremely thin.

Emission of harmful gases, including methane and nitrous oxide, have reached record levels.

Nitrous oxide levels have increased nearly 40 per cent between 1980 and 2020.

Researchers have warned that a “critical and unpredictable new phase of the climate crisis” is ahead of us.
