The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has announced that some regions will experience heavy rain and strong winds due to a low-pressure area, which could intensify into a severe cyclonic storm.

According to the department, the strong low-pressure system that has formed in the east-central Bay of Bengal has moved northwestward and is expected to persist. It could develop into a depression within the next 12 hours, potentially reaching cyclonic storm status in the east-central Bay of Bengal by October 23. By October 24, it may reach the northwest Bay of Bengal (off the coast of Odisha, India, and the western coast of Bengal), and on October 25, it could strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm and cross between Puri and Sagar Island, affecting northern Odisha and the western coast of Bengal.

Currently, the influence of the strong low-pressure system could bring widespread scattered rainfall across Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, Bago Region, Yangon Region, Ayeyawady Region, Taninthayi Region, Chin State, Rakhine State, Kayin State, and Mon State until October 24. In some areas, there could be region-specific heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds.

The department has issued a warning about possible natural hazards such as strong winds, heavy rain, lightning, thunderstorms, hail, flash floods, and landslides. Residents near highland areas should be cautious of landslides, while those living near small rivers and streams should be aware of potential flooding. Precautions are also advised for domestic water and air transportation.

On October 21, strong winds caused some roofs to blow off houses in Ward 19, Shwepyithar Township.
