Former Poland international, Wojciech Szczesny has revealed that he had to return from retirement to accept FC Barcelona’s offer after speaking with his countryman Robert Lewandowski and some members of his family.

Wojciech Szczesny, who retired from professional football a few weeks ago, also revealed that some of his family and friends said he would be “very stupid” of him not to accept Barca’s proposal.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper said his countryman, Lewandowski, who is currently playing for FC Barcelona, was the first person to reach out to him about the possibility of joining the Spanish giants.

“I’m so proud to be at Barça and I’m ready for this challenge! Lewandowski was the first person to call me last week…” the 34-year-old Polish goalkeeper said after sealing his short-term deal with Barcelona.

“It took some convincing. At the start, I wasn’t sure I was ready, but my friends and family told me… if you don’t accept Barça proposal, you’re very stupid.

“I agree with them! This club is just fantastic.”

Note that Barcelona had to go for Wojciech Szczesny after losing their first-choice goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, to a knee injury.

The former Juventus goalkeeper is expected to make his Spanish La Liga debut for Barca on Sunday, October 6, 2024, against Alaves.
