Fundraiser set up for surviving victim of Surrey bus stop crash

A man was killed and another was left with serious injuries after a pick-up truck crashed into a Surrey bus stop last week.

Mounties say they were called out to the area of 144th Street near Hyland Drive in the city’s Newton neighbourhood after receiving a report of a vehicle collision around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 5.

The truck was travelling north on 144th Street when it crossed into oncoming traffic.

“The vehicle then collided with a bus stop bench injuring two pedestrians and causing damage to the surrounding property,” Surrey RCMP Sgt. Kimball Matsumoto said at the time.

“One 33-year-old male was declared deceased at the scene. A second male in his 30s received minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.”

Dalbeer, the man who survived, suffered “critical injuries to his legs and a concussion, and is now facing a long and challenging recovery,” a fundraiser set up by those who know him says.

“Dalbeer is new to Canada and has his family back in India, leaving him without anyone to care for him here. His life has turned upside down due to this accident, which has not only taken a toll on his health but also created financial burdens from medical bills and lost wages,” the GoFundMe explains.

The fundraiser’s organizer, Simran Kaur, explains they’re now trying to raise $100,000 to support Dalbeer during his recovery.

“Every donation, no matter how small, will help cover his medical expenses, rehabilitation, and essential living costs as he begins to heal.”

In an update on Monday, the Surrey RCMP says “impairment by drugs” is believed to be a factor in the fatal crash.

The 44-year-old driver of the truck was arrested on scene.
