Surrey man sentenced to 10 years in prison in triple stabbing that killed sister-in-law

A Surrey man has been handed a ten-year sentence for a triple stabbing in 2020 that killed his sister-in-law and seriously injured his two-year-old niece and elderly father.

Harpreet Singh was convicted on one count of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault.

With credit for time served, Singh will remain in custody for four years and fifteen days.

Court proceedings revealed that the stabbing unfolded after an argument in the family house between Singh and his father that escalated to Singh attacking his sister-in-law with a kitchen knife. His father was also stabbed, trying to stop the attack.

Court records show the child also suffered serious injuries in the attack.

The Crown argued that Singh’s case should be considered “near murder,” on account of the fact that he was “overcome with emotion” and made no attempt to cover up his offence — among other reasons. As a result, his sister-in-law’s death was considered manslaughter.

Family members testified that Singh had anger issues before the stabbing, noting another incident that was resolved before needing intervention, in which he attacked his father with an iron rod.

Singh is a dual citizen of Australia and India and will be deported when he completes his sentence.
