1 dead, 4 injured after car speeds off the Coquihalla Highway in Merritt Saturday

The Merritt RCMP says one person is dead and four others were taken to hospital after a single-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon.

Officers were called out to the Coquihalla Highway north of Juliet Road shortly before 4 p.m. after a four-door sedan travelling northbound drove off the road at high speed, “eventually rolling before coming to a stop.”

Five people were on board.

“Four passengers were taken to hospital and 1 person was declared deceased despite lifesaving efforts by first responders,” Corp. Brett Urano said.

Mounties say that while they believe speed was a factor, drugs and alcohol have been ruled out.
