Man arrested, charged after fatal August shooting in Gastown

Vancouver police say a suspect has been charged in relation to a fatal shooting in Gastown in late August.

Const. Tania Visintin of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said police received reports that a man had been shot near East Cordova and Carrall streets just before 3:30. a.m. on Aug. 29.

“Despite attempts by first responders to save his life, the victim died before he could be taken to hospital,” she said.

The VPD taped off part of Carrall Street between East Hastings and Powell streets and also blocked Cordova Street between Abbott and Columbia streets.

A white tent could be seen behind police tape, with dozens of VPD officers scouring the area. Just after 7:15 a.m., the BC Coroners Service arrived, leaving the area around 8:30 a.m. the same day.

In an update Thursday, the VPD says the BC Prosecution Service has charged a 28-year-old man with one count of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 43-year-old Terry Bachtis.

The VPD says the suspect was arrested Wednesday night in the Downtown Eastside — nearly six weeks after the shooting. The VPD says he remains in custody Thursday.
