Car plows into Abbotsford encampment, runs over unoccupied tent

by · CityNews

A car ran off the road and into an encampment in Abbotsford Tuesday morning.

“At about 6:30 this morning, we had a single car go off the highway at Highway 1, right near Peardonville,” Corp. Michael McLaughlin told 1130 NewsRadio.

The AbbyPD says the vehicle rolled over a tent, however, no one was inside at the time. “Fortunately, the tent was unoccupied, so nobody’s been hurt by this collision,” McLaughlin added.

Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

“We got the driver taken to hospital for an evaluation, just in case there are some other medical issues that led to this crash. Nobody outside the vehicle was hurt. … W’re not contemplating charges. There may be a lawful reason for why this vehicle went off the road. It could be something like a medical-related event. If there is something we need to follow up on for enforcement, [we] will do that at a later time,” McLaughlin explained.

If weather was a possible factor in the crash, the corporal explains there’s no information as yet to say whether that was a contributing factor.

“It could have been much worse, if somebody was I that tent. It’s such a busy area, it could have been a lot worse.

“Anytime you have a vehicle going off the road at highway speeds, that presents a real danger, not only to the driver, but to other drivers and potentially anyone off the road. The fact that there was a tent, this could have been much worse. We’re glad nobody’s hurt,” McLaughlin said.

The AbbyPD says there are no further injuries.
