A car was written off after being destroyed by fire yesterday. Firefighters from Newton Abbot were called to the incident near Warebarton roundabout.

The call came in just before 6pm (Oct 5) with crews arriving on scene discovering a black Mazda 6 well alight. The fire crew managed to bring the fire under control using a hose reel jet and cutting equipment to access the engine block and boot.

A spokesperson for Newton Abbot fire station said the firefighters needed to access the two areas of the vehicle to make sure the blaze had been fully extinguished.

They said that whilst the fire was being tackled, another member of the crew used a mat to block a drain cover to ensure that the fire water runoff, and other fluids from the car didn't go into the nearby water sources.

The spokesperson confirmed that the occupants of the car were all safe and well and had managed to get out in time before the fire crew turned up. They added: "Although the fire was dealt with quickly, the car was unfortunately, 100% destroyed by fire."
