by · DevonLive

A fish and chip shop in Newton Abbot sustained "severe damage" after a fire broke out in a fryer last night (Sunday, October 20). Fire crews were called to Market Fish and Chips, on Market Street, shortly before 8pm.

Five fire engines rushed to the scene and the shop was evacuated. The blaze quickly spread to the roof of the building and three more crews were deployed.

The fire has since been put out but severe damage has been caused to the ground floor of the shop. There is also smoke damage to the flat above the shop.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "It started at 7.50pm, smoke was seen issuing from the property and we sent five fire appliances. There was a fire in one of the fryers and the shop was evacuated.

"The fire spread to the extraction system and the flat roof, which was well alight. An additional three appliances were mobilised, and an aerial ladder platform was being used to contain the fire.

"The fire involved the kitchen and shop front. We’ve had at least one appliance there overnight, but the fire is now out. There was severe fire and smoke damage to the ground floor and slight smoke damage to the first floor residential flat above the shop."
