Death of inmate, 22, sparks prison investigation

by Anita Merritt · DevonLiveAn investigation is being launched following the death of a 22-year-old man who was being detained at HMP Channings Wood. The prisoner, who has been named as Mason King, died this Wednesday, October 2.
No further details have been confirmed surrounding the circumstances of his death. An inquest has not yet been opened during which further details will be disclosed.
A full jury inquest is then likely to be held at a later date. An independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman takes place after a death in custody.
It is to ensure the prison looked after the deceased properly during their time in prison. The results of the investigation are shared with the coroner.
A prison service spokesperson said: "HMP Channings Wood prisoner, Mason King, died on October 2. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate."
