Firefighters tackle blaze in narrow street in heart of Exeter

Crews were called to Gandy Street in the early hours of this morning

Firefighters were called to tackled a blaze at a property in the heart of Exeter's city centre in the early hours of this morning.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called out at 2.16am today [Oct 6] to a building in Gandy Street, a narrow shopping lane which runs parallel to the larger Queen Street.

Three engines from Danes Castle and Middlemoor were mobilised along with the aerial ladder platform from Danes Castle.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "On arrival crews confirmed heavy smoke logging on the second floor. Crews used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. There was minor smoke and fire damage to a room in the building."
