Coronation Street's Maureen Lipman engaged as she finds love again after death of two partners

The iconic Coronation Street actor, who re-joined the cast of Corrie in 2018 as Evelyn Plummer, popped the question to her partner while on a train in a spur of the moment decision

Coronation Street legend Maureen Lipman has announced her engagement.

The actress, aged 78, has found love again and shared that she proposed to her partner David Turner while on a train.

Dame Maureen popped the question in a spontaneous moment while on the way home from a royal event, the launch of Tom Parker-Bowles' latest cooking book.

"Later that night my partner David and I decided to tell our children that, with a combined age of 156, we are going to get married," she said.

She noted that had initially been "against the M word" but realised that it was the festival of Tu B'Av.

Similarly to a Leap Year tradition, this Jewish festival marks an occasion where traditionally, a woman can propose to a man.

Writing in an op-ed for The Spectator, the actress added: "Unable to resist the gag, I slid under the table separating us onto one knee and asked him for his hand. To my surprise and slight panic, he gave it."

Maureen was married previously married for two decades, and also was partnered from 2008 to 2021.

Her marriage to dramatist Jack Rosenthal lasted from 1974 until his death in 2004.

He was best known for writing 129 early episodes of Coronation Street and over 150 screenplays.

Maureen has two children, both writers, named Amy and Adam Rosenthal.

The seasoned actress previously opened up about the grief she experienced following his passing.

“I found it almost impossible to grieve because my nature is to make people laugh,” she told Prima magazine.

“And then, I'd feel terrible about the fact I didn't look like I was grieving enough.”

Maureen then enjoyed a relationship with retired computer expert Guido Castro. The couple were together from 2008 until his death in January 2021.

Guido, who was suffering from Parkinson's disease, passed away after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

Maureen told the Daily Mail at the time: “He got Covid – it wasn't Covid that killed him but it weakened him terribly."

“We don't know how he got it or when or if he had it when he got the vaccine,” she added.
