Met Office issues new yellow weather warning for North East warning some areas will see 40mm of rain

Durham and Darlington are among areas set to see yet more heavy rain

Areas including Durham and Darlington will bear the brunt of a "band of rain" which could see some places hit by 40mm of rain on Wednesday.

That's according to a new Met Office yellow weather warning. Forecasters think up to 40mm of rain could fall between now and 3pm in some areas. The warning is in place for a section of the country covering York to County Durham.

In the warning notice, weather experts have said: "A band of heavy rain will move slowly south through Wednesday, before clearing during the afternoon. A further 20-30mm of rain is likely, with a few places perhaps seeing 40mm or more, leading to some travel disruption."

This comes as heavy rain has seen roads flooded and transport impacted across the region this week. On Tuesday evening Northumberland MP Ian Lavery warned areas of the south-east of the county were underwater.

On Wednesday thus far the A1 has been closed both ways between junction 60 at Bradbury and junction 59 at Aycliffe due to flooding. Diversions are in place.

This is the Met Office advice: "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

"People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

"Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
