Google has announced a major free upgrade to its Gmail email service, which is aimed at making it easier to find information buried in your inbox - here's everything you need to know

Gmail users, it's time to rejoice as 'big changes' are on the horizon for this widely-used email service. Google has just revealed an exciting free upgrade that promises to make searching through your inbox much less of a chore.

In the coming days, Android and iPhone users will witness an enhanced summary cards feature in Gmail. These cards, which provide a quick peek at forthcoming events and have been around for a bit, are now set for a refresh.

Not only will these summary cards sport a fresh design to help you easily identify details from emails concerning purchases, events, bills, and travel plans, but they'll also include a handy new action button. This addition means you can swiftly add events to your Calendar or send out invites to friends, or even set reminders for bill payments with ease.

Google has also amped up these Summary cards, enabling them to automatically extract and display pivotal information pulled together from related emails, all while updating this data in real-time. So, if you're tracking a parcel that's on its way, expect that summary card to be right on top of your inbox keeping you posted.

This applies to flights, social gatherings, and looming bills too. To cap it off, there's another feature named "Happening soon" which cleverly positions itself at the top of your inbox, spotlighting items when they become most pertinent, reports the Mirror.

For instance, if the delivery of an order is two days out, the "Happening soon" section will showcase the purchase summary card for easy tracking of your incoming parcel.

If you have several deliveries arriving at the same time, the summary cards are stacked, and you can expand, dismiss or click to go directly to the related email. "Today, updated purchase summary cards are rolling out for individual emails on Android and iOS, with event, bill, and travel summary cards and 'Happening soon' following in the coming months," Google confirmed.

"In the future, all four card categories will show across individual emails, in the 'Happening soon' section and in Gmail search, so you can easily find the information you need however you use Gmail."
