Dog dies after collapsing in Benwell street days after strays found nearby

by · ChronicleLive

The RSPCA is appealing for information after a dog was found collapsed in the street, just a few days after three stray dogs were discovered in the same area.

The dark-coloured Staffordshire Bull Terrier was found collapsed and emaciated on Colston Street in Benwell, on October 13. She was rushed to the vets by members of the public who found her.

But sadly due to her poor condition vets made the decision to put her to sleep to end her suffering. They then called the RSPCA to investigate further in the hope of tracing the dog's owner.

The discovery comes just days after three small breed dogs were found straying on the nearby West Road. They were taken to vets, where one had matted fur that was so severe they had to be anaesthetised and shaved at the vets.

Thankfully the other two dogs were in fair health and all three are now being cared for by a local animal shelter.

RSPCA Inspector Lucy Green is investigating and suspects the two incidents could be related, but is keen to hear from anyone with information.

She said: "Anyone with any information about who owns these dogs, particularly how the female came to be left in the street in such a bad way, can contact us in complete confidence by calling our Inspector's appeal line number on 0300 123 8018.

"Right now, far too many animals are suffering which is why we have launched Join the Christmas Rescue so we can continue our life-saving work during our busy winter period when we tend to see a rise in pet abandonments - more so now due to the cost-of-living crisis."

Anyone who finds an abandoned animal should get them the help they need as quickly as possible. The RSPCA have advice on their website to help the public help animals themselves. If you find a dog you believe has been abandoned, please contact your local authority's stray dog service; you can find out more here.

The RSPCA has launched a dedicated cost of living hub to help outline and signpost the help out there for owners and we also have more than 200 Pet Food Bank Partnerships across the country to support struggling pet owners.
