Teenage motorcycle rider dies and second seriously injured after crash with taxi in County Durham

A 16-year-old boy has died after being involved in a motorcycle crash in County Durham.

The boy was riding a motorcycle with a teenage passenger when the fatal collision happened on Park Road, Stanley, just after 8pm on Saturday. The crash involved a taxi and both boys who were on the bike were taken to hospital.

Tragically, the teenage motorcycle rider was declared dead on arrival at Newcastle RVI. The bike passenger, another 16-year-old boy, sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital.

The taxi driver is believed to have been unharmed. Durham Constabulary is now appealing for information and an investigation has been launched.

A statement from the force said: "Police are appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision in Stanley yesterday (October 5). Officers were called to the incident involving a taxi and a motorbike in Park Road, just after 8pm.

"The motorbike rider and passenger suffered serious injuries and were both taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment. Sadly the driver of the motorbike, a 16-year-old boy, was declared deceased on arrival. His family have been informed.

"The passenger, a 16-year-old boy, remains in hospital. The taxi driver is not believed to have been injured. The road was closed for several hours and reopened in the early hours of this morning. An investigation is ongoing and officers want to thank members of the public who assisted at the scene, particularly those who gave initial first aid."

The North East Ambulance Service dispatched three paramedic crews, a doctor, a rapid response paramedic, a hazardous area response team (HART) and an officer to the scene before those involved were taken to the RVI.
