by Liv Clarke · ChronicleLiveHolidaymakers heading to Belgium have been warned by the Foreign Office to 'remain vigilant' in public places where terrorist attacks could happen or when demonstrations are taking place. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has issued an update for its travel guidance for the country this week, renewing information on the risk of terrorism, and demonstrations and strikes.
Belgium is a popular destination among UK tourists in the winter months as its towns and city's host picturesque Christmas markets. Brussels, Ghent and Bruges are all hotspots during the festive season.
But British travellers are reminded that "terrorists are likely to carry out attacks in Belgium". These could be "indiscriminate" and could happen in the following locations: public transport; national and international travel hubs; music, sporting and cultural events; government buildings and international institutions; and places of worship and religious sites.
The FCDO added: "You should be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local authorities." It warned travellers that the Belgium government has set the national threat level at 3 - 'serious'.

It said: "The Belgian authorities have successfully disrupted various attack plans, making a number of arrests in recent years... You can expect to see an increased police presence, and additional safety measures may be in place. Be aware of your surroundings and follow the advice of local authorities."
UK tourists are also reminded that demonstrations and strikes are likely in major cities, especially in transport hubs and the Schuman (EU quarter) in Brussels. It warns that "there is a risk of unrest and violence" even though more demonstrations are peaceful.
Strike action can also cause travel disruption. Tourists are urged to check local news and with their travel provider for any changes, which can be announced at short notice.
The FCDO added: "If you are in areas where large gatherings are taking place, remain vigilant and move away quickly if there are signs of disorder. Avoid protests, expect delays on some major roads and follow the advice of the authorities."
