A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a woman was stabbed in Newcastle.

Mark Downey is accused of leaving the female, in her 50s, with serious injuries to her jugular, as well as wounds to her face and chest. The 51-year-old is alleged to have carried out the attack in Stotts Road, in Walkergate, on Sunday, November 10.

Downey, of no fixed abode, appeared in custody at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Tuesday to face one count of attempted murder. Because of the seriousness of the case, no plea was entered and he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

Gurjot Kaur, prosecuting, said the suspected victim needed surgery to injuries to her jugular and was still in hospital. Ms Kaur said the woman also had numerous wounds consistent with being stabbed multiple times.

The prosecutor said the case was indictable only and could only be heard at the crown court. Magistrates remanded Downey in custody to next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on December 10.

Speaking at the time of the suspected attack, The North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to an incident in Stotts Road in Newcastle shortly after 5pm this evening (November 10). We dispatched one ambulance crew, a rapid response paramedic and a clinical team leader, and they treated and transported one patient to hospital for further treatment."

Pictures from the scene taken around 6pm on Sunday showed police officers in the area and crime scene tape across the road.
