The collation of the results of Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State has commenced.

The collation is being carried out in Benin at the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

This was just as information emerged that the electoral umpire has uploaded about 98 percent of the results from the contest on its electronic platform, iReV.

As at press time on Sunday morning, the collation had started.

But before the process began, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, was asked to leave the collation centre.

According to available reports, Obaseki stormed the collation centre following reports that the results were being manipulated, especially in Edo North Senatorial District.

The incumbent, of the Peoples Democratic Party, wants the party’s candidate in the election, Asue Ighodalo, to succeed him.

Ighodalo’s closest contender, based on the results released so far on the INEC iReV portal, is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Monday Okpebholo.

A third contender and candidate of the Labour Party, Olumide Akpata, is way behind in the results released so far.

Akpata lost his polling unit to Ighodalo.

As at 2am on Sunday, out of the 4,519 polling units in the state, INEC had uploaded the result sheets of 4,435 polling units on its IReV.

The election took place in the 4,519 polling units across the 18 local government areas of the state.

The PDP and APC have been alleging the manipulation of the process by each other.
