by · The Eagle Online

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the postponement of the collation of results for Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State.

The announcement was made via a statement by the Resident Electoral Commission of INEC in Edo State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha.

The statement came minutes after the collation appeared to have started.

“This is to inform the general public, political stakeholders and observers that the collation of results for the ongoing Edo State Governorship election will resume today (Sunday) 22nd September, 2024 at 10.00am,” the REC said.

Onuoha in the statement said the “collation process is being conducted transparently and in accordance with the extant laws and guidelines” of INEC.

He urged all stakeholders to be patient.

The postponement saw the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his Delta State counterpart, Sheriff Oborevwori, leave the collation centre at the state headquarters of INEC in Benin, the Edo State capital.

According to available reports, Obaseki stormed the collation centre following reports that the results were being manipulated, especially in Edo North Senatorial District.

The incumbent, of the Peoples Democratic Party, wants the party’s candidate in the election, Asue Ighodalo, to succeed him.

Ighodalo’s closest contender, based on the results released so far on the INEC iReV portal, is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Monday Okpebholo.

A third contender and candidate of the Labour Party, Olumide Akpata, is way behind in the results released so far.

Akpata lost his polling unit to Ighodalo.

As at 2am on Sunday, out of the 4,519 polling units in the state, INEC had uploaded the result sheets of 4,435 polling units on its IReV.

The election took place in the 4,519 polling units across the 18 local government areas of the state.
