An elderly British couple have been found dead in a detached rental house in northern Greece after having not been seen for several days.

The bodies of a 74-year-old unnamed retired engineer and his 72-year-old wife were discovered on Saturday at a property in the suburbs of Thessaloniki.

The owner of the house the pair had been renting for the last nine years found the bodies on Saturday at around midday and then alerted the police.

He had reportedly gone to the property to check on the couple because they had not been seen for around two months.

The bodies were reportedly in a state of advanced decay, but according to Huffington Post Greece, there were no traces of criminal activity.

The bodies were discovered by the owner of their rental house, who had gone to check on the couple after not having seen them for two months. Following the horrific discovery, the owner called police who have been investigating the cause of the couple's death

The husband is believed to have died first, as he was found naked in a room with the door closed, while his wife was found lying face down in a separate room wearing just her underwear.

Police also found an envelope on the ground floor with money to cover their rent for October.

An autopsy to uncover their causes of death is currently underway.

Neighbours told local press that the pair had not been seen for days, and were described as 'lonely people' by their landlord.

According to Keep Talking Greece, the husband had suffered with alcoholism while the woman had struggled with psychological issues. Neighbours also said that the pair had frequent fights.

The news comes after a British photographer collapsed and died after losing consciousness at the top of a Greek beauty spot last week.

The 67-year-old unnamed man was found in the Vouraikos gorge in Kalavryta after his friends called emergency services.

He was reportedly with other British and German hiking photographers hoping to capture the views as fighter jets flew overhead on the last day of drills.

Friends tried to resuscitate the 67-year-old to no avail. He was later pronounced dead at the Kalavryta Hospital.

Investigators are still working to establish the cause of death, with first impressions suggesting he may have been suffering from an illness, per local media.
