Boy, two, is killed in fireplace dancing accident

A boy, 2, has been killed in a fireplace dancing accident after his mother allegedly left him and his sister 'home alone' while she went to work.   

The boy was injured when a fireplace fell on him in his home in Wigan, Greater Manchester. 

He was rushed to hospital with serious injuries yesterday but sadly died a short time later.

Wigan Today reported that the mother had gone to work leaving her daughter - who is of legal age to supervise the child - in charge of her sibling.

There was a large emergency services presence near Fisher Close in Wigan yesterday after the incident. A North West Air Ambulance was also scrambled to the scene. 

The boy sadly died when the fireplace fell on him in his home on Fisher Close in Wigan, Greater Manchester. He was rushed to hospital with serious injuries yesterday but passed away a short time later

One resident told Wigan Today: 'We saw a lot of police and ambulance activity but didn't know what it was at the time.

'Now we know, it is appalling news. I feel so sorry for the family.'

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police told MailOnline: 'At around 2.15pm yesterday, officers were called to reports regarding a concern for welfare of a child on Fisher Close, Wigan.

'Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, a two-year-old boy died at hospital.

'Enquiries are ongoing.'
