Etiquette expert reveals if denim is appropriate to wear at a wedding

Wedding dress codes are notoriously difficult to decipher, but one guest recently went viral when she wore an extremely casual denim jumpsuit to a ceremony based on her husband's advice.

The US-based TikTok user shared a video of wedding guests in a variety of outfits - but mostly suits, with many ruffled floral dresses that were perfectly suited to the fall foliage.

'POV: Your husband tells you the wedding's dress code is casual and that everyone will be in jeans/cargo pants,' the content creator wrote over her video, while showing off her on-trend denim jumpsuit.

Commenters were aghast at the laid-back ensemble, commenting, 'Even if my husband said casual-my first thought would not be jean outfit' and 'Honey that's not WEDDING casual.'

To find out if denim is ever appropriate for a wedding, FEMAIL consulted Beaumont Etiquette expert Myka Meier about decoding dress codes.

'POV: Your husband tells you the wedding's dress code is casual and that everyone will be in jeans/cargo pants,' the content creator wrote over her now-viral video

In the viral video, the TikTok creator wore a zippered jean jumpsuit with boots and a brown purse, while her husband wore gray slacks, brown boots, and a button-down shirt.

Some wedding-goers were in velvet blazers, and there was one man in jeans and a button-down - but there were no cargo pants in sight.

The video received more than 48,000 likes and a thousand comments, where many women said they'd never trust their husband to convey a wedding's dress code correctly.

'A wedding is NEVER casual,' a commenter declared.

'Never trust the husband on the dress code!' was a popular sentiment.

'I'd rather be overdressed than underdressed. And for a wedding if someone says 'casual' I go business casual at minimum,' one viewer chimed in.

'Okay but even a casual wedding calls for a sundress at the least. Maxi skirt and blouse?? Anything but a denim jumpsuit.'

'Wedding casual rarely means everyday casual,' another person explained. 'I just overdress at this point because I never trust my husband. Weddings, parties, doesn't matter. I'll probably be in a dress.'

According to etiquette expert Myka Meier, 'A wedding is often one of the most important days of someone's life, and it's important to dress to mirror the occasion'

Some people shared their own horror stories from following their husband's fashion advice, with one woman saying, 'My boyfriend once told me this about his company Christmas party. People were there in tuxedos.'

'It is still fairly casual but idk if my go to would ever be a full denim jumpsuit unless it was a themed party in Nashville, I fear,' a TikTok watcher announced.

'He said jeans not ALL jean,' a commenter quipped, as another person said they would 'leave' if they were in her shoes - or in this case, boots.

However, some people supported her jumpsuit, with one person calling her outfit 'cute af' and another defending her by writing, 'I mean tbh it looks pretty casual still! I see others in jeans and no else really looks THAT dressed up to me.'

So, is it ever appropriate to don denim to watch someone walk down the aisle?

New York City-based etiquette expert Myka Meier told DailyMail.com, 'A wedding is often one of the most important days of someone's life, and it's important to dress to mirror the occasion.'

'The term "casual" when it comes to weddings still would be more formal than what you would wear to a casual lunch, avoiding garments that are seen as too informal such as denim, athleisure and shorts,' Myka, who often weighs in on wedding dos and don'ts, advised.

'You want to dress to show respect to the couple which is the most important thing,' Myka explained.

While a formal denim dress could do the trick, unless a wedding is themed, it's probably best to avoid wearing an all-jean ensemble.

And, unless your significant other is a fashionista, you'll more than likely want to investigate the wedding dress code on your own.
