I dumped my fiancé weeks before my wedding and wed my maid of honor

A woman has revealed how she dumped her fiancé just weeks before they were set to walk down the aisle together and wed her maid of honor instead.

Kayla Doody, 29, from Florida, was in the midst of preparing to tie the knot with her longtime boyfriend when she had a life-changing realization: she was in love with someone else.

And to make matters more complicated, that person was her best friend, Erika Green, who was set to be the maid of honor at her upcoming nuptials.

She ultimately decided to leave the groom-to-be and went on to marry Erika less than a year later, and now, they're as happy as could be together.

While chatting with The Sun recently, Kayla explained that she met her boyfriend, Harry, whose name was changed for privacy reasons, while in college in September 2013.

They started off as friends, but things eventually turned romantic in 2018, and they started dating.

She explained that due to her 'low self-worth,' she was 'just grateful' that she had found a 'man who loved her,' but deep down, she knew she wasn't 'madly in love with him.'

'I felt settled and comfortable, but I knew in my heart I wasn't madly in love with Harry,' she confessed.

'It felt more like companionship than what my friends had – they were so passionate about their partners.'

In 2022, she met Erika - who was married to a man - through her job as a personal trainer, and 'within months' they had become 'best friends.'

She said they would 'message daily' and often hangout as a foursome with their respective partners.

All the while, her relationship with Harry was progressing, and in February 2023, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. 

'It was a surreal and confusing moment. I cared for Harry and I'd always wanted to be a bride, to have a special day where everyone could see that I had been chosen,' Kayla recalled.

'But, at the same time, I felt stuck, like Harry was my only option. I was smiling as I said yes, but inside, I felt trapped, as if I was just making the best of things.'

Kayla's best friend Erika seemed ecstatic for her, and happily agreed to be her maid of honor. 

But everything changed in August of that year, when Erika made the shocking admission to Kayla that she had gotten intimate with a woman.

Erika explained that she had realized that she was gay and wanted to divorce her husband - and Kayla, who said she had 'kissed a few girls' back in high school, found herself 'immediately jealous' of the woman Erika had been with.

'Suddenly, I realized I had feelings for Erika,' she explained. 'I tried to push those feelings away. However, after that conversation, there was a spark that hadn't been there before. 

'We kept making flirty jokes, and when we looked at each other it felt electric.'

In September - just three weeks before her wedding date - Kayla told The Sun that she cheated on her fiancé with Erika, and after they 'slept together,' she knew for sure that Erika was 'the one.'

A week later, Kayla said she broke the news to Harry that she was 'in love with Erika' and wanted to call off their wedding.

She recalled him appearing 'deflated, as if he knew there was no point trying to salvage their relationship.'

Soon after, Erika filed for divorce from her own husband, and by January 2024, the two women were engaged. 

They officially married in April, and despite 'hating' that she 'hurt' Harry, Kayla said she doesn't regret her decisions.

'Exchanging vows [with Erika], I knew I was marrying my soulmate. I had no regrets, we were meant to be,' she gushed.

'We now live in Florida and are blissfully happy and planning to have IVF and start a family. I have begun writing a memoir about my journey. 

'I want people to know that you deserve to be your true self and experience unconditional love. The journey there might be hard, but it's absolutely worth it.'
