The assailant involved in the sensational murder of a teacher’s family in Amethi on Thursday executed the crime single-handedly. He fired nine bullets from a country-made pistol to eliminate the entire family of four members.

Sources said that during interrogation, Chandan Verma disclosed that he killed all the four family members of the teacher on his own. However, the police authorities in Amethi and senior officials at the DGP headquarters here have so far not confirmed his arrest.

The cops have picked up Chandan Verma’s sister, brother-in-law and two more kin, including the owner of the mobile shop where the accused had parked his motorcycle and later fled on it after the killing.

It is being said that Chandan Verma came alone on a motorcycle and entered the teacher’s house and shot Sunil Kumar , his wife Poonam Bharti and two minor daughters, Drishti (5) and Mickey (2).

He fired nine shots ‒ three bullets hit Sunil, two were found in his wife’s body and one each hit the two children. The police also found that Chandan Verma was having an affair with Sunil’s wife.

Sources said that police interrogation so far revealed that when Chandan reached Sunil’s house, he knocked on the door and then perhaps Sunil or his wife opened the door. After this, Chandan started firing with the country-made 32 bore pistol, due to which Sunil and Poonam died in the courtyard of the house. Chandan then entered the other room and shot Sunil’s two innocent daughters and fled.

The police have also received important information about Chandan’s WhatsApp chat. Chandan had written in the chat that five people will die. It is suspected that he intended to commit suicide after killing all four.

Sunil’s father has lodged an FIR against Chandan. Sunil’s mother-in-law has also accused Chandan of murder. She said that Chandan used to threaten to kill her daughter-in-law because she had filed a case against Chandan for molestation. Chandan was also pressurising Poonam for a settlement in the molestation case. When Chandan went to jail in the molestation case, he had threatened the family.

The family said had the police acted promptly, the lives of all the four members could be saved.

Meanwhile, on Friday morning, UP’s Minister of State and local MLA Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh reached the spot and met the officials.

While talking to the media, he said that the government was working with a zero tolerance policy against crime and criminals and in this case too, the criminals would not be spared.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had expressed grief over the incident on Thursday and said in a post on X, “The incident in Amethi is highly condemnable and unforgivable. My condolences are with the bereaved family. In this hour of grief, the UP government stands with the victim’s family.”

The chief minister said that the culprits of this incident would not be spared at any cost and strict legal action would be taken against them.
